Wigan St Judes dreams of entertaining French side Lezignan came to an end at the Stobart Stadium, Halton last night when they went down 64-12 to an impressive Widnes Vikings side that led 26-6 at the break.
The first half started with a bang for St Judes when they took the lead after seven minutes through Glen Hunt after good work from Gavin Corfield who pick up a loose ball after a kick and bounced off a Vikings body. Dean Picton added the extras to make up for a penalty miss minutes earlier.
Although Dave Allen pulled the lead back to two points with a well taken try the visitors were in the driving seat until the 19th minute and they were then hit four tries in eleven minutes.
Anthony Thackery’s converted try made it 10-6, Lee Doran (21), Scott Yates (26), Dave Houghton (31) also crossed with Shane Grady kicking three goals.
In the opening minute of the half Grady crossed before St Judes responded three minutes later with a cracker. Nathan Jones collected a crossfield ball cut inside before passing outside to Darley King who went in for a magnificent effort as was Picton’s touchline conversion.
But the Vikings responded with six further tries and five Grady conversions. The tries came from a Danny Hulme brace (48, 58), a Richard Varkulis brace (55, 68), Allen’s second (71) and Thomas Coyle (75).
As the hooter sounded the St Judes were given sound congratulation from both their own fans and the Vikings supporters in an attendance of 1,622.
